It’s not uncommon for one to get the occasional burn, usually something small due to carelessness or a lack of safety precautions while carrying out various activities. While most burns don’t pose much of a threat, they can still cause a substantial amount of pain and discomfort. It is important to take the right steps to recognize what type of burn you have so that you may treat it with the correct burn ointment accordingly.

There are many different burn ointments creams and gels out on the market today, and many can provide the relief and healing you may need for your burn. However, there are different active ingredients that can help or hurt, depending on the type of burn you have incurred.

Topical relief can come in the forms of ointments creams and gels. Some can come in the form of antibiotics or corticosteroids and even moisturizers. Creams have a mixture of half oil and water equally. They are easily spreadable to cover a wider area and can be washed off relatively easier than some other topical formulas. Burn ointment usually will contain about 80% oil and 20% water, with the oil consisting of petroleum jelly or mineral oil. This will lead to a greasier feel and will often last longer on the skin surface. This also serves to actively carry the medication inside the ointment onto the skin.

Corticosteroids in topical medications are indicated with inflamed tissue conditions as with eczema or poison ivy. Examples are Cortaid, 1% or Hydrocortisone. Corticosteroid ointments generally enter the skin more completely due to being more occlusive than creams.

Antibiotics can come in ointment and cream forms. Polysporin, Neosporin, and Neomycin are a few different types. Generic forms of these are also available, and these all can help with minor scrapes, cuts and burns. Gels are also available for soothing, such as Aloe Vera, for sunburns.

As a general rule of thumb, when deciding to use ointments creams and gels:

  1. Weepy, wet skin lesions may best be suited for creams or gels.
  2. Ointments allow greater absorption for topical steroids and anti-fungal medications.
  3. Creams cover larger surface areas of the skin.
  4. Ointments may be better for sensitive skin, as creams contain more preservatives.
  5. Ointments are best for drier skin conditions, such as psoriasis.
